Jorge Lucero is now an Assistant Professor of Art Education at The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. He completed his PhD from The Pennsylvania State University after having taught in the Chicago Public Schools for seven years. Jorge did his undergraduate studies at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), concentrating in painting and drawing and--during his final year and half--in art education. He is K-12 art certified in the state of Illinois.

Jorge’s teaching as art practice has occurred at SAIC; Gallery Rompecabezas; DePaul University; The Terra Museum of American Art; Decatur High School, GA; Chicago Arts Partnership in Education; Links Hall; The Hyde Park Art Center; McHenry County College; The National Art Education Association Conference (Chicago, Baltimore, and Seattle);  Gallery 400; Reed College; The Pennsylvania State University; Harold Washington College; The Curriculum and Pedagogy Conference (Atlanta and Akron); The American Education Research Association Conference (San Diego); Teachers College, Columbia University; Pedestrian Project, Chicago; The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign; University of Northern Iowa; and Northside College Preparatory High School.

Since 2007, Jorge has served on  the advisory board of Chicago Arts Partnership in Education. Jorge is also an active board member of the non-for profit performance group Every house has a door, and the founder of the now inactive small zine press, FOR AND FROM OUTSIDERS PRESS. Jorge is the cover editor for the Journal of Curriculum and Pedagogy (Taylor and Francis), published by The Curriculum and Pedagogy Group .

Jorge's current research is concerned with the interactions between contemporary art practices with distinctly pedagogical properties (such as performance and conceptual art) and how those modes of operation propose alternative approaches to learning, relationships, ethics, spirituality, generativity, and civic engagement. Currently his pedagogical and artistic practices merge in works of nearness that he completes with his wife and their four children.
